《Speaker Tree》 Wei-Hao Tseng

This work makes use of special conductive ink to paint numerous black lines on a wall, which is equivalent to extending numerous nodes from a completed electric circuit. When a participant uses a pencil to draw and join lines of conductive ink on the wall, due to the conductive nature of the pencil, the newly created lines form a complete circuit and allow electrical currents to pass through. This is similar to adding resistors between two nodes of a connection. Since the lengths and areas of pencil lines and lines of conductive ink change with audiences’ strokes, the change is the same as adding a variable resistor (VR) to the electric circuit. The VR is capable of changing the output of a sound frequency to produce different sounds. Apart from using pencils, the participant could use any other conductive material (even their own body) to connect two ends of conductive ink lines to create different sounds due to the change in resistance value caused by the conductive material used.
