Yi-Ching Chen
ANIMA
The word animation (アニメーション) comes from Japanese means Manga traced out by lines. While the Latin root for animation is anima means soul; and the root for animate means “make it alive”. Accordingly, a precise definition of animation is “Transforming those insentient and inert into things that full of live and motion.” Such qualitative transformations calls for imagination, and consequently animations are characterized by their abundant employment of exaggerative, mutative, and imaginative techniques in presentations.
The first animation festival (ANIMA) organized by the Taipei Digital Art Center, derives its name from the visual qualities. There are three primary themes in this exhibition, namely the short film by Taiwanese New Talents; graduation films from 2008 French digital animation school SUPINFOCOM; and the compilation of fine works by the Parisian animation school GOBELINS from 2003 to 2009.
In the program of Taiwan New Talents, the animation production techniques range from the traditional hand-drawn, puppet, cut-outs animations to digital 3D computer animations. In addition to the commonly seen storytelling pieces, there are also special-effect pieces that have employed the collaborative work of life actors, and experimental pieces that radiate individualistic qualities. Altogether, there will 19 productions from the students graduated from Taiwan and American universities and professional from animation industry.
SUPINFOCOM and GOBELINS are two of most renowned schools of animation in France, the works of students have been recognized as winners of international awards. Altogether, the two schools will provide 37 student works. Marked by the uniqueness of characters, scenes, storylines, presentations, and aesthetic style, these works are filled with variety and originality, while the animation techniques employ are simply stunning. Many of the features are awarding winning pieces, which include the opening sequence from the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
These 56 pieces will be arranged into six groups, and they will be presented by video projection. We do hope ANIMA will not only induce the growth of viewer population of animation, but also serve as local animation professionals to inspire their creativity and ingenuity.
